Livestreaming is hard.
You need a plan. You need time. You need your buddies to support you.
Then the question is…
Why do we want to do that?
Because it helps us build skillsets and it can open doors.
Let me begin this week’s newsletter with skillsets.
7 Transferrable Skillsets You Can Port Over from Your 9–6 to 6–9
Everyone wants to be an entrepreneur.
It is sexy to be one. It is attractive to register ourselves as one in our Linkedin profile. It is cool without a job.
Ideals are great. But we have to face reality too.
Are you a bankrupt entrepreneur?
Are you an entrepreneur living from hand to mouth?
Are you able to pay off your bills and mortgage without financial sponsorship from relatives and friends?
You see, we walk a thin line given the cards we have and the ideals we hold. Having a salary while simultaneously working to realize our dreams need not go in opposing directions.
They can work as one.
Most importantly, our 9–6 can complement our side-hustles.
The 7 Transferrable Skillsets We Learn from Our 9–6
These are valuable skillsets we can learn while getting paid.
Asking for a budget — This is top of my list. It is never easy to ask for money. Think that your boss loves you? Try asking for a bigger budget without raising your targets. Asking for a lower price tag means fewer resources to work with. A higher budget allocation indicates higher expectations. We learn to ask for a budget within the comfort of our confidence.
Asking for a deal — Learn this. It is easier to ask for a sale while carrying a company name. Our companies have invested a big deal to build a good brand. Customers trust the corporate brand name more than our name. Learning to ask for a sale while leveraging on the company’s name is good practice. We will eventually have to ask for a deal using our own name. That is way more difficult. I have been there.
Asking for a timeline extension — Another transferrable skillset we have to start learning somewhere. Make that somewhere your 9–6. Take, for instance, running a project. A project timeline extension burns a hole in the company’s pocket. Imagine presenting to the board declaring that the projects under your charge have run out of money and you need more. I have been there, many, many times. Learning how to ask for more money while screwing up and not getting fired is an art. Next time, you know how to ask for a timeline extension and more money from your clients without getting ghosted or ignored.
