Want to Earn Money from Your Hustle? Great. Avoid These Techniques for a Start
Knowing what to avoid is equally as important as knowing where to start
If you want to earn (more) from your side-hustles, you need to avoid activities that bring you $0.
Specifically, I am referring to sales techniques that seemed to work well for all the internet gurus online but failed miserably when you use them.
I am here to tell you one thing. It is not you. It is about them.
The internet gurus overhyped the utility of these techniques.
These are the techniques / activities I refer to when we try to win sales.
Discovery calls.
Strategy sessions.
Rings a bell? Here’s why you have to avoid them like a plague.
Commonly Used Strategy 1 — Discovery Calls
Oh my gosh. I beg you. Bury this silly tactic.
At the beginning of my freelance copywriting side-hustle, I would spend an hour with prospects attempting to sell the following.
Why do they need copywriting?
Discovering their business, professional, side-hustling needs for copywriting.
Talking endlessly about how I can add value to their professional and personal endeavors.
It was an hour of saliva-spitting exercise. I would (as many internet gurus preach) add tremendous value by teaching prospects something new, reviewing their websites, and giving next-step recommendations.
Guess what?
Many dropped me a big fat Thank You and then disappeared from the face of the Earth.
I would discover, to my horror, that my recommendations have been implemented onto their websites without engaging me to do it. Yes, I check their websites periodically to hunt for opportunities.
If that is you, take a tip from me.
When you are just starting out, you will likely do Discovery Calls wrong. Unless you have someone to mentor you on this technique, I say the following.
Avoid Discovery Calls like a plague. Stop losing money.
Commonly Used Strategy 2 — Free Strategy Planning Consultation
“There is only one winning strategy. It is to carefully define the target market and direct a superior offering to that target market.”
Everyone, from executives to side-hustlers, are obsessed with strategy. Many treat it like gold dust fictitious Wizards blow over their heads to turn them into ultra-intelligent beings within a fraction of a second.
We love shortcuts.
I knew Strategy Planning would be a brilliant opportunity to build my copywriting consulting services. People like to talk, embrace shortcuts, and pretend to be deep thinkers.
Strategy Heroes are Execution Zeroes. So long as they send business my way, I am happy.
I figured, rather simplistically, that I could devise time-consuming copywriting strategies for the prospects to implement and then sell them my services because they do not want to do the necessary work.
I got to work. My Calendly is open for free Strategy Planning sessions. Adding value upfront, is that not?
And just like Discovery Calls, this technique was a spectacular failure. Here’s why.
Prospects with no roadmaps in place took mine and implemented it by themselves.
Prospects with no clues on how to take their business forward took my ideas and implemented them by themselves.
Prospects with no confidence with my work, or me, took my recommendations and hired someone else with more years of experience on Fiverr to finish the job.
I need not explain why I am upset with myself. And with the bogus recommendations on the Internet.
My copywriting recommendations, in my opinion, have added tremendous value to my prospects’ business. The trouble is, they have not added any value to my bank account.
